HOW MANY PEOPLE DO WE NEED?

The school requires three new English instructors. The positions we need to fill are available from late February, 2001. For more info about the types of people we need, please click here.

HOW DO YOU APPLY?
Please look over these job pages and email us your resume/CV, along with any questions you might have. We'll respond within a few days. The next stage would be for us to request that you email or fax a formal letter of application for attention 'The Manager, Mrs May Hsu' (please see our contact details here). Once we receive this letter, we'll be happy to contact you either by email or by 'phone to finalise things and get your questions answered.

VISA ISSUES
It's essential to understand that English schools in Taiwan do not generally provide you with contracts or working visas until you are physically present in Taiwan. You should prepare to arrive in the country with a visitor's visa, the application process for which we'll be happy to enlighten you. Naturally, you should also be in possession of a valid passport (no temporary documents) and your original University degree certificate on arrival.

WHAT"S THE WORKING DAY LIKE?

As from the beginning of 2001, the country will follow a 5-day working week (Mon-Fri) with occasional changes to this schedule if and when the Government decides to declare a public holiday.

The school expects teachers to be available for a 10-hour day, generally from 10am to 8pm. You would get an hour off for lunch, as well as adequate lesson prep time for an average of 5 to 6 classes a day  (classes are usually 50-min long).

You would also be asked to perform various administrational functions, keep your class files updated, and generally be responsible for yourself as far as possible. The school staff all speak English and will be happy to assist you in settling down to a work routine. As long as you keep a sense of humour and a flexible attitude, you should be able to cope quite well in Taiwan.

WHO WILL YOU BE TEACHING?

Probably the full spectrum, from small classes of pre-schoolers, through adult 1-to-1, to large classes at a local high school.  Occasional substitution for other teachers might be required, so prepare to be exposed to a wide variety of classes and students. Language instructors provide instruction for all levels of English Foreign Language learners, from beginner to Advanced.

Students are generally well-disciplined and the biggest challenge will be to hold students' attention rather than hold them down. Classes are generally on the smaller side, with an average of 6 students or fewer per class.

About the positions...

CLASSROOM ISSUES

The school is divided into 2 distinct components: an English Immersion Kindergarten and a Language School. No teaching assistants are used. The school provides all teaching materials and textbooks for teachers. The school has photocopiers, computers and all necessary facilities to assist teachers in their task. In addition to in-class teaching, you will also be responsible for your own lesson prep, keeping your class files up to date, and other admin. Teachers are responsible for all aspects of their class teaching and will have to ensure that they familiarise themselves with what's required admin- wise. (Don't worry - we DO have someone else to sweep the floors).
