WHERE IS IT?

About 12km from the West coast of Taiwan in a river valley surrounded by lush hills and squarely on the main NS rail and road transport routes. You can see the city on the map below. We're also about 160km across the Taiwan Straits from mainland China (though you'd never know it).

WHAT'S THE PLACE LIKE?

It's not the scenic jewel of the island, but it does have lower living costs than other cities and it is easy to get to the major centres of Hsinchu, Taichung and Taipei. It's surrounded by lush hills and less than 30 minutes drive from a nice lake area. There are the inevitable Golden Arches and KFCs here, as well as lots of coffee shops, so caffeine and MSG addicts shouldn't have any problems...

CAN YOU FIND STUFF YOU NEED?

The local supermarkets carry most international brands, and it's easy to get hold of all things pharmaceutical. The only things you'll find it difficult to get hold of here are English books, salads, and decent cheese. There's plenty of English on TV and there's even an island-wide FM pop station which broadcasts in English.

About life in Miaoli City...

GETTING OUT OF TOWN.

Scooters will take you into the hills only 10 minutes away, while regular train and bus services can get you to where you're going quite comfortably. The capital, Taipei, is 90 minutes away by train. The Silicon Valley of Taiwan, Hsinchu City, is 25 minutes away, and there are mountain valleys and hot springs fairly close by.
